Total Shade built three structure types over the diamond complex at Tumbleweed Park in Chandler: hip-roof and cantilever steel canopies shading the bleachers and dugouts, plus tensioned fabric sails over the gathering areas between fields. The work spanned spectator seating, player benches, and open congregation space — the three spots a ballfield crowd actually sits during a Phoenix-metro afternoon. Every frame was fabricated in-house at our Phoenix shop and engineered to Maricopa County code before the first post went in the ground.

The Shade Structures We Built at Tumbleweed Park

The Tumbleweed install combined three distinct systems, each matched to how the space gets used. Over the bleachers we set hip-roof canopies — four-post frames with a sloped roof that sheds monsoon rain and clears UV off rows of spectators. The cantilever structures carry their load on a single rear column line, so the shade reaches out over the dugouts and seating without planting posts in front of the sightlines or in foul-ball territory.

Between the fields, where families and teams congregate, we tensioned three-point fabric shade sails. The sails read as architecture rather than a flat roof — angled planes that cover wide gathering areas with far less steel than a solid canopy. All three types use commercial knitted HDPE shade fabric, which blocks roughly 90–95% of UV depending on the color and weave, and powder-coated steel framing rather than the lighter residential gauge.

This product mix is typical of our parks and municipal shade work: hard-roof systems where rain shedding and longevity matter most, fabric sails where span and aesthetics lead.

Bleacher and Dugout Shade for Chandler Parks

Ballfield shade lives or dies on orientation and span, and a diamond complex makes both unforgiving. Bleachers face the field, so the canopy has to block the afternoon sun coming over a spectator’s shoulder — get the angle wrong and you shade the back row while the front bakes. Our hip and cantilever frames at Tumbleweed were sized to cover full bleacher footprints, with column heights set to clear standing fans and keep the structure out of play.

The engineering side is where most of the real work sits. Structures across Chandler and the wider Valley are designed to Arizona building code and ASCE 7 wind loads, with design wind speeds running roughly 90–115 mph for the Phoenix metro. That matters here because monsoon microbursts routinely push past 60 mph, and an open ballfield offers nothing to break the gust. We engineer footings and frame steel to those loads and provide stamped drawings for the city’s review — our wind-load engineering guide walks through how that calculation drives post size and concrete depth.

A few honest caveats for any park planner. The fabric is a consumable: commercial HDPE shade fabric typically carries a 10–15 year warranty, and the canopies are built so the cover can be replaced without rebuilding the steel — useful when a sail eventually needs re-tensioning or a hailstorm cuts a life short. Phoenix dust also settles, so plan on periodic rinsing to keep colors and airflow consistent across a 4-to-6 field complex. Size the structure to the crowd you expect at peak, not the average Tuesday; the most common mistake we correct on municipal jobs is a canopy specced two rows too short for tournament days.
