Total Shade built a sculptural hypar tensioned-fabric structure, poolside cabanas, and 4-point shade sails for Talking Stick Resort, a destination resort and casino in Scottsdale, Arizona. The structures cover pool decks and lounge areas where guests spend hours outdoors in 105°F-plus summer heat. Each one runs on powder-coated steel and knitted HDPE shade fabric that blocks roughly 90–99% of UV, fabricated in-house in Phoenix and engineered to Arizona building code and ASCE 7 wind loads of about 90–115 mph. The mix reads as resort architecture, not a row of catalog canopies.

The Shade Structures We Built at Talking Stick Resort

Talking Stick uses three structure types, each matched to a different part of the pool environment. The centerpiece is a hypar shade structure — a hyperbolic-paraboloid form where two corners lift and two pull down, twisting a flat fabric panel into a saddle. That curvature is what gives the resort its sculptural silhouette, and it earns its keep: the warped surface drains monsoon rain and dust toward the low corners instead of pooling, and the doubly-curved tension keeps the fabric taut across a wide span on as few as four columns.

Around the pool perimeter, freestanding cabanas give guests a defined, private shaded footprint — a steel frame with an HDPE top sized to cover a daybed or seating cluster, set close enough to the water to stay useful through the hottest part of the day. Over the broader lounge decks, a run of 4-point sails carries the open spans. Each 4-point tensioned-fabric sail anchors at four corners and tilts on its axis, so two sails overlapping at staggered heights cover a long deck while letting heat escape between them. All three types carry knitted HDPE fabric, with commercial shade-fabric warranties that commonly run 10–15 years.

Pool and Resort Shade for Scottsdale

A resort buys pool shade to extend how long guests stay outside. Open pool decking in Scottsdale can read 130°F-plus on a July afternoon, and the air under a ventilated fabric canopy typically runs 15–20°F cooler than bare concrete — the difference between a deck that empties by 11 a.m. and one that fills through the day. That math is why the pool and aquatic shade we build leads with usable hours and UV protection for guests, not just the look from the lobby.

The engineering carries the rest. Frames are commercial-grade steel, powder-coated to resist Scottsdale’s UV load and the chlorine-and-dust mix around a pool deck, with column and beam gauges sized to each span rather than a single default — the trade-offs are laid out in our steel and HDPE materials guide. Maricopa County structures are engineered to Arizona building code and ASCE 7 wind loads; monsoon microbursts can top 60 mph in minutes, and a breathable HDPE top lets wind pass through instead of loading the fabric like a solid sail. A hypar’s saddle geometry helps here too, spilling gusts off its curved faces rather than catching them flat.

A few honest limits worth stating. Shade fabric is a consumable — over its 10–15 year life it re-covers on the same steel frame for far less than a rebuild. Wind ratings have a ceiling, and a poolside deck needs a periodic rinse plus a re-tension check every year or two to keep a sail or hypar taut and the warranty intact. Resorts and HOAs planning a larger project can start with our Scottsdale commercial shade work before booking a site visit.
